Functional Skills Program

Blackhawk Middle School proudly serves students in our Functional Skills program with dignity, care and high expectations. We provide meaningful access to learning, relationships and life skills in an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and respected. Our vision is simple: every student belongs, every student can grow and every student deserves opportunities to connect and succeed.

Our Environment

Our two classrooms are designed to meet different learning needs. Students can work independently, in small groups or with teachers and aides. Visual schedules help students know what to expect each day.

Peer Buddies

Blackhawk’s Peer Buddy Program is one of the most powerful parts of our school culture. Students from general education classrooms are paired with students from our Functional Skills program to build real friendships and create authentic inclusion. Buddies eat lunch together, attend assemblies together, work on classroom activities and support one another throughout the school day. This program develops empathy, leadership, responsibility and kindness while showing students what pride, character and sportsmanship look like in action.
Coffee Cart

Once a week, students partner with a staff member to visit classrooms and offer coffee, tea, hot chocolate and simple snacks made in the school kitchen. Students greet the class, help serve items and assist with cleanup as appropriate. The activity supports social communication, independence and basic life and vocational skills while giving students a positive role in the school community.

We serve many different student needs and work to bring out each student’s strengths. We cater to every individual student at Blackhawk.
Functional & Accessible Kitchen

In our kitchen, students practice cooking, measuring and following recipes to create delicious foods. They also learn important life skills, like teamwork, hygiene and safety. Sometimes, students sell the food they make to school staff, giving them hands-on experience with responsibility, communication and money management.

Mild and Emotional Disabilities Support

Blackhawk provides tailored support for students with mild or emotional disabilities through dedicated hubs and intervention programs. These students remain in general education classrooms while accessing individualized support as needed.

Individualized Support for Every Student

From Functional Skills to Mild and Emotional Disability programs, Blackhawk is committed to meeting the diverse needs of all students, helping each one thrive academically, socially and personally.
