Each year, one boy and one girl 8th grader are selected for the Mathias Award, recognizing the students who best demonstrate pride, character and sportsmanship throughout their three years at Blackhawk. Recipients are chosen by staff and voted on by the entire school community.

Academic Awards Night
This event celebrates students who make honor roll and those in the top 10% of each class. Teachers select the top 10% in every subject and students receive certificates of achievement. Due to its size, the ceremony is hosted at Snider High School.

Academics

Teaming & Collaborative Support
Our building is structured around grade-level teams, with two teams per grade level. This model creates a smaller learning environment where teachers know students well and work closely together. Teacher teams meet weekly to collaborate on student progress, interventions and enrichment, ensuring every student receives targeted support.

Supporting High Ability Learners
Approximately 26% of Blackhawk students are identified as High Ability. We intentionally design learning experiences that encourage creativity, critical thinking and challenge within the core curriculum. For students who are both High Ability and have an IEP (Individualized Education Program), teams collaborate to provide individualized services that support areas of need while continuing to nurture areas of strength.

School Leadership Team
Our School Leadership Team regularly examines the diverse profiles of High Ability learners and works to identify effective instructional strategies. This ongoing collaboration helps ensure that all students are engaged, supported and challenged in the classroom.

Staff Dedication

Rockstars
The Rockstars recognition program celebrates staff members who exemplify the Portrait of a Connector competencies. Teachers and staff are nominated by their peers, with unlimited nominations highlighting the many ways they support students and colleagues.

Nominations are shared by reading the “why” behind each recognition and all honorees are celebrated in both the family newsletter and staff newsletter, ensuring every Rockstar is recognized and appreciated.

Unique Opportunities

Drama Program

Blackhawk’s Drama Program offers students opportunities to perform on stage through both plays and musicals. Last year’s productions included the musical Mary Poppins and the play Alienated. Students continue to showcase their talents with a spring musical each year.
